American Experience: Murder of a President

imageLast summer, I read Destiny of the Republic  by Candice Millard. Possibly one of the best books I've ever read. Millard is a great story teller, but her subject was captivating. I'd not known much of Garfield before this except that his presidency was short. He was an intelligent, thoughtful man. He loved his family. He had huge faults, but truly cared for all citizens of the US. He was not a man to be bought. The efforts of  A. G. Bell to save his life was an amazing side story.

Today, I'm being rather lazy and I came across a program on Amazon. American Experience: Murder of a President. It's not as good, not as thorough, not as well-rounded as Destiny of a Republic, but it is a good retelling of Garfield's life and death - flaws and all. We have no idea what Garfield might have done as president if he'd lasted longer than his half a year, but to think about the accomplishments and character of presidents past seems a good idea today.

An irritation with Kindle

I don't have the device itself, but the program is loaded on my computers and iPod Touch. I never paid much attention to the little location thingy because I just plowed through a book. BUT and this is huge, I finally was able to buy a Kindle textbook and I was so excited until I'm to use a rubric on page 129. No problem. I can't figure it out, but it's got to be able to convert to page numbers. I hit Google with my question. And the answer is: ding, ding, ding It can't be done! There isn't a way to convert. What's more, Amazon has told multiple students that their way is superior. APA style even has a citation using Kindle locations. Well, whoopdidoo. That doesn't do a student trying to find a specific location in a book a lick of good. Nook on the other hand (who I have not been supporting as much as Kindle) does have page numbers. Guess who will be getting my ebook business in the future?

over a month

Here I sit wondering why it's been over a month since I've posted. Not really wondering. I know exactly why. School started. Grad school followed. In the last month, I've written well over 20 lessons, developed daily quizzes, written online tests and lessons, trained the staff on how to use a new program hooked into the state evaluation system. I edited a small math book on analogies as well as worked an open house and a back to school night along with working my way through cataloging lessons - some of which were less than successful. I've made some new friends in the way of colleagues and fellow students. I've chosen to work alone and at times with others. I attended my first Circle meeting at Home Moravian and signed up to work two candle teas in December.
