Reading through Jonah

Reading through Jonah in the car today and here are some things that struck me in one way or another.

God tells Jonah his plan and Jonah flees from God's presence. Where did he really think he could go that God wouldn't know about?

The men on the boat didn't want to throw Jonah over even though they were frightened by what he had told them. They actually tried to row to shore rather than kill him. Why would they do that? If man is totally depraved, what made these men, who had been pleading other gods for their own safety, not want to save themselves by killing him?

How big would a fish really have to be to swallow a man?

The people of Ninevah repented - beginning with the King. What had happened in the king's experiences that made him react this way instead of hardening his heart?

Jonah gets mad? Who does he think he is? He wants an entire people to be killed so he can save face. What a ton of gall. It seems Jonah excelled at getting mad about all the wrong things.

Five TV Shows I Enjoy

I don't watch TV exactly, but I do have shows line up in my HULU queue, so I do watch those at my convenience. M erlin - this is a sci-fi channel show. I've been an Merlin fan since I was a kid and read The Once and Future King. Merlin and Arthur are both young men in this one. Lie to Me - I love Tim Roth's sassy character and the way he always gets the best of someone by psychoanalyzing them. Fringe - Another sci-fi show, but on ABC. It's just weird at times. Dual universes. Reminds me a bit of Sliders, but much darker and ominous. Characters have developed nicely. Always some very odd twist. FlashForward - I like this one enough I wanna buy the book to see how they compare/contrast. World changing event happens where everyone sees a glimpse of  their futures for the same time period. FBI is trying to find out why and how it happened - how to keep it from happening again. Lots of intrigue. mmmmm that's only 4 DollHouse - didn't make it. This show

Changing denominations

A little over a year ago, when I left my job at the church and walked away to find a new one, I also left my church. The church, that church, the old church? For 17 years, it had been my church and then it was not. Ron and I had taught more classes than I can remember - together and apart. We worked with discipleship, new members and of course, the library. The boys spent their teenage years there and were in countless programs, went to numerous camps as campers and then as counselors. They went on mission trips and made their first international trips with this church. But the time had come to go. We had different jobs and Ron continued teaching Sunday School until the year ended. I didn't go anywhere in that time period. It was in many ways a time of healing. A few people knew why I wasn't there.
